Programmers IDE
- Eclipse - can be a mission to install but is an awesome cross-platform IDE, and some must have add-ons like the Web tools platform and the EPIC (Perl) and PHP developers toolkit (PDT) language plugins
Firefox Extensions
Your using Firefox right? of course you are, and you should also check out the following essential web developer extensions:
- Firebug - essential debugging tool
- Cookieswap - change cookie profiles
- Webdeveloper - loads of page inspection goodness
- Modifyheaders - useful for tweaking Useragent string etc
- Measureit - onscreen ruler/tape-measure
Other tools
- HTTP debugging proxy - Fiddler or Wireshark
- Shrinksafe - excellent Java Script compressor from the folks at dojotoolkit
- Unicode Character Code Charts - from the source @ unicode.org
- Colour Picker - choose background, text and link colours and see them displayed
