Web content transformed or targetted at mobile and small footprint web devices has always been a niche effort thats been through periods of popularity but generally (in NZ anyway) been poorly supported by devleopers and devices in the long run.

We recently purchased a BIG piece of software at work from a world leader in the tool's market which had until recently supported a small-footprint interface but lack of customer demand for it saw it being dumped from the currently supported version.

Mobile services are something that are obviously driven by customer demand, very much chicken-and-egg, but if trends in Asia (especially Japan) are anything to go by its only a matter of time.

Especially given the current investment activity in mobile content delivery by providers like Yahoo and other news/portal sites and ISPs.

Devices are now sophisticated enough, with enough processing power, and telecoms infrastructure at the point where content delivery to mobile devices isnt throttled by teleco bandwidth or througput over wireless or remote connections.
